TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
FRET (Flexible Reinforced Electronics with Textile) is a novel platform for embedding electronics into high-performance textile substrates. This technology enables deployable structures such as antennas and solar panels to be both flexible and mechanically robust, making them suitable for space-constrained environments. The first application of FRET, is a textile based solar panel that is 50% lighter and thinner than conventional solutions. It provides scalable power generation for satellites, with a design that fits within CubeSats and larger space platforms. The platform’s durability under repeated bending, UV exposure, and vacuum conditions has been validated up to TRL5, with an in-orbit demonstration planned for October 2025. Beyond space, the technology is being adapted for stratospheric vehicles and terrestrial or emergency applications.
• 50% lighter and thinner than traditional solar panel structures
▪ Withstands high mechanical strain and bending fatigue
▪ Power-to-weight ratio up to 162 W/kg (space); 200 W/m² (terrestrial)
