Inflatable robotic arms for in-orbit servicing

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

IDRA robotic system features inflatable links and electric joints that create a robotic arm capable of deploying and retracting on command. The inflatable structure provides a high volume-to-workspace efficiency and reduced launch cost, while the electric joints preserve traditional actuation benefits. Links consist of modular chambers, allowing custom length and deployment control. Constructed from durable, high-performance textiles (Kevlar®, Vectran®, Zylon®), IDRA’s inflatable links ensure environmental resistance and rigidity under low-pressure inflation (as low as 10 kPa). The arm integrates AI-driven visual servoing for autonomous positioning and supports teleoperation. The design allows it to be stored compactly on-board and used for mechanical repair, subsystem upgrades, refueling, or space debris handling.

• Inflatable links allow compact stowage and up to 4x expansion in length
▪ Modular chamber-based design enables tailored configurations
▪ Payload comparable to JEMRMS or Canadarm at lower mass
