Celebrating Innovation and Technology Transfer with ESA: STAM at the Salon International des Inventions

9-13 April 2025 Geneva (CH)

STAM actively joined in the Salon International des Inventions in Geneva (CH), which saw the participation European Space Agency (ESA) as guest of honour, celebrating both the ESA’s 50th anniversary and the 35th year of its pioneering Technology Transfer Programme.

Within this framework, key insights from Luca del Monte (Head of Commercialisation Department at European Space Agency – ESA) and Matthew Edwards (Commercialisation Officer at European Space Agency – ESA) marked a valuable occasion of reflection on the outstanding development of the ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme. Hence, not only space technology is now deeply embedded in daily life, but also the Programme has progressed into a dynamic innovation ecosystem.

As ESA Technology Broker for Italy, STAM proudly showcased its role in bridging the gap between space and non-space sectors. One success story was the fully circular sports flooring system developed by Artigo S.p.A (Mondo Sport&Flooring) and inovaLab: an outstanding example of Italian innovation flourishing from space expertise. Building on this, STAM colleague, Mattia Muracchioli, presented other successful use cases illustrating how STAM supports businesses in applying space technologies across various sectors. From facilitating access to funds and expertise – the ESA Spark Funding to name one – to favour the connection among innovators with the right partners, STAM continues to empower companies to turn ideas into impactful solutions, while working at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and practical implementation.

Since the early 1990s, STAM’s founder Andrea Barbagelata and Executive Director Stefano Carosio have been working with ESA’s TEST (Transferable European Space Technologies) Catalogue first, and then with today’s digital tools and platforms. Yet, the mission remains the same: to drive meaningful, sustainable innovation, making space a real engine of value.

Being part of the ESA Commercialisation Network, is both an honour and a responsibility; thus, STAM thanks ESA and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) for their trust and partnership. Here’s to the next 35 years of space-powered progress!
